Fun With Filters And Brushes In Photoshop

Decided to have a mess around with filters and brushes in Photoshop. Here is what I created.

For this image I think I used Filter > Noise > Median. I also used Filter > Render > Lens Flare. Unfortunately I didn’t save this one so I can’t make any screen shots.

For the image above I took screen shots to help me remember how I made it.

Here are some of the others I created. I really like bright colours 😀

Inspiring Animated Site – Soleil Noir

I did a search to look for some inspiration.

This site has some great animated graphics.

Here is a small sample from the site.

I’m not sure if this kind of thing will be useful for this project. However, it is important to stay up-to-date with what other designers are creating. Either way, this site inspires me to improve my skills.

Fresh! –

I was passing the time reading the Mail Online. I came across this page and noticed the advert around the article.

Since the page above is so full, here is the design without everything else. I liked this and thought it was worth putting on my blog. It was bright and cheerful and I couldn’t help but notice it. I was also interested in the white type which looks like handwriting.

I did a search for TK Maxx to see if I could find further examples. Here is their site. Very neat and tidy.

Close up.

Close up. This looks really pretty.

I clicked explore. This part is dedicated to ‘Me. By Me.’ One of the posts says ‘Post a photo of the colourful clothes you love in the comments for your chance to be in our next ad!’ People post photos of the clothes they bought at TK Maxx. These screenshots show what you see if you scroll down. More images with captions load as you scroll. It reminds me of summer and going on holiday which I think is the point since its nearly summertime. It looks eye-catching and the layout is tidy.

Close ups. I really like the way they’ve done the borders. So clever and eye-catching.

When I returned to look at the site I noticed it had a different background every time. I really like this and think it looks great.

I really like the colour palate they’ve used.

I don’t think I’ll be able to use everything I’ve seen here because the client wants black and white. Imagine how it would have turned out if he’d wanted a lot of colour. I can use an accent colour though. I can also make frames in the same way they have here.

Unintuitive Design! –

So I was looking at the beautiful and affordable accessories at The home page has a slide show which showcases their pieces. I absolutely love the peachy coloured necklace seen here in the centre. So I click on it, fully expecting to go straight to its designated page. I want to see a close up, the price and alternative colours. So I click and guess what! Nothing happens! Immediately I’m irritated, annoyed and frustrated. This is definitely a pet peeve of mine.

I’m also confused by the grey box with the white type inside. It looks so out-of-place. It looks like its been added as an after thought. Strange.

I did finally find the piece but it took a really long time. I used the blue menu at the top which requires you to know the difference between statement and delicate. How am I meant to know which category this necklace is? Very annoying. By now a lot of people would have just given up and gone to another site. When I did finally find it, it wasn’t even available in the colour combination advertised!

I went back and had another look at this page. After a long time I finally worked out that I can click on this bizarre box. I only worked this out because I accidentally rolled over it with the mouse and it changed colour. So I click on it expecting to be taken to a page showing just these five pieces. Nope! I’m taken to a page that contains five whole pages of random pieces. I had to scroll for an eternity to find it.

Here the colours used are really bright. Normally I’d like this type of thing but here it just looks bizarre and squashed.

Here is another screen shot of the slide show on the home page. The grey box looks uncomfortable on the page. I tried to read the information. I was genuinely interested but the next slide appeared before I was even half way through! Again feelings of irritation and annoyance.

Design and arrangement of websites is down to opinion in some respects. Some people may find this design is fine for them but I didn’t. I really don’t think it’s too much to ask, especially on a shopping site, that I can get to the items easily, without the need for having to guess what category pieces may or may not belong to, or scrolling for a very long time just to find one thing. It just seemed like such a shame since the accessories are so pretty. Putting a lot of information on a slide show just isn’t viable. Always make sure elements have enough breathing room.

Apart from these problems the rest of the site looks great in my opinion. They’ve used a nice modern typeface and the colour scheme is fresh. The menu looks fine. They do use a lot of white space around their pieces which looks nice. You can zoom in on pieces effectively so you can see them clearly. Nice search box at the top.

Its been very interesting looking at this site and I feel I’ve learnt a lot about the importance of intuitive design and convenience.

Colourful, Fun, Inspired

I was glancing over Stassi Schroeder’s instagram and saw this. Stassi is a fashion writer and reality TV star. It’s actually the background I’m interested in here! This paint design isn’t appropriate for my current project. It’s just a nice, colourful piece of inspiration. It would be easy to make something like this in Photoshop or Illustrator, including the transparent part on the right.
